NOTICE: If you are unsure about wiring a relay or any electrical component in your tanning bed, please call our service department for assistance.
Have the make, model, and year of your tanning unit ready when ordering replacement relay(s). Also have all of the indentifying part numbers, particularly the coil rating, off of the existing relay.
Some relays have been replaced by another type of relay. Relays are sometimes interchangeable depending on the number of open and closed contacts and the coil rating. Consult our parts hotline at
1-410-529-0515 or your electrician for instructions on how to replace these relays.
Relays FAQ's
1. How do I know I need a new relay (or contactor)?
Generally, you do not have to replace a relay unless it goes bad.
If your relay is defective, either all or part of your tanning unit will not run. For example, if the leg of the relay that runs to your cooling fans is burnt, your fans will not run.
Or if the leg of the relay that runs to the top of the unit is burnt, then the top half of the lamps will not come on.
If your unit will not come on at all, first verify that you have power coming to the bed from the breaker box. Check your breaker box first to make sure that it hasn't been tripped.
With a voltage meter, check voltage at the tanning unit. If you have voltage coming to the unit, but the unit will not come on, check the voltage at the relay.
If you have voltage coming in but no voltage going out, usually you will need to order a replacement relay.
You may want to contact a licensed electrician if you do not have a voltage meter or are unsure on checking the voltage.
2. What information do I need to order the correct replacement relay?
As always, have the make, model, and year of your tanning unit ready.
Have all identifying part numbers off of the existing relay. They may not make sense to you, but most distributors have a cross-reference for those part numbers.
Also note the coil rating as marked on the relay.
You may also want to count how many screw terminals are on the existing relay.
Some relays are interchangeable or have been replaced by aftermarket relays. When you receive your new relay and it looks different or has different numbers, do not automatically assume that it is in incorrect part. If you have any questions, please contact your parts distributor.
3. How do I replace the relay?
Turn the breaker off to your tanning unit.
Hook the wires up to the new relay in the same position that they came off.
Replace the wires ONE wire at a time. This way you do not get confused. Either do that or write down which colored wire goes to which terminal. (Example: black wire connects to L1, etc.)
If you have an aftermarket relay that doesn't have the exact same markings or terminals as your existing relay, please either contact an electrician or call the company you purchased the relay from. They should be able to help you.
